Western Hog-nosed Snake: Heterodon nasicus |

Distribution: Southwestern Manitoba, Southern Saskatchewan and Southeastern Alberta. Size: Up to 2.5 feet in adults. Distinguishing Characteristics: Usually brown or grey in colour with dark blotches down it's back and lighter coloured spots on the side. Snout is upturned, leading to its name. Will often play dead if threatened. Very mildly venomous rear fanged snake and is not considered dangerous to humans. Habitat: Sandy or gravelly plains areas primarily. Diet: Insects, rodents, amphibians and small reptiles including other snakes.
