Distribution: Southern Manitoba to Southern Quebec plus all the Maritime provinces excluding Newfoundland. Size: Up to 16" in adults. Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown, grey or black with varying numbers of stripes running down its length. Often has light spots or a ring around the nape of the neck. Underside is usually bright red but can be orange or yellow. Habitat: Near wooded areas including grasslands or abandoned buildings. Diet: Insects, worms and slugs.
