Distribution: Western Canadian provinces and southern portion of Northwest territories. Size: 2.25-3 feet adult average Distinguishing Characteristics: Dark in colour with lateral stripe as well as 1 dorsolateral stripe on either side. Yellowish underside. Several large dens occur in Manitoba, particularly near the interlake area. Check out the Narcisse updates on Nature North. Habitat: Marsh or swampy wetlands during the spring to fall, denning in underground limestone caves, rock piles, tree roots, animal dens or any underground hole that lies below the frost line so that they may survive the winter. Diet: Amphibians, leeches, earthworms and rodents. | |||
